Qld: Survey to gauge seniors' fear of crime
BRISBANE, Aug 13 AAP - A survey to assess how fearful senior citizens are of crime
will take place in Queensland.
Queensland Premier Peter Beattie announced the $65,000 "Safe and Secure" survey today
at the Ballycara Retirement Village in the northern Brisbane suburb of Scarborough.
The survey will "assess the actual level of fear of crime that exists in the elderly community."
"We need to survey our seniors to ensure that we understand how you feel about crime
because perception can be a reality," Mr Beattie told the Ballycara residents.
Mr Beattie said the last survey of this kind was conducted in 1991.
He denied that this was a political stunt one week short of the Redcliffe and Chatsworth
by-elections and said the survey would have taken place regardless.
"This survey will help develop further strategies that will help seniors live a full
life without fear."
The survey results are due at the end of the year.
